Ingredients

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 3/4 cup dill pickles, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion (optional)
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely grated (optional)

Method

  1. Chop the ingredients: Finely chop the dill pickles, herbs, and onion if using.
Mix everything together: Add mayonnaise, pickles, dill, parsley, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, sugar, black pepper, onion, and garlic to a medium bowl.
Stir until creamy: Mix well until evenly combined and creamy. Make sure the herbs and pickles are spread throughout the sauce.
Taste and adjust: Add extra lemon juice for brightness or more pickles for crunch if desired.
Chill before serving: Refrigerate for 20 to 30 minutes for the best flavor and texture.
Serve: Enjoy with fish sticks, crab cakes, shrimp, fish tacos, fries, onion rings, or seafood sandwiches.

Notes

Notes

  • For a lighter version, replace part of the mayonnaise with plain Greek yogurt.
  • Fresh dill creates the brightest flavor, but dried dill can be used if needed.
  • If using sweet relish instead of dill pickles, reduce the sugar slightly.
  • Homemade tartar sauce tastes even better after resting in the fridge for a few hours.
